Eight-time Grammy winning Producer and Songwriter Bryan-Michael Cox is appropriately named one of Billboard’s “Top 10 Producers of the Decade” and sits on Billboard’s “Hot R&B Song of the Decade List”, “Hot 100 Songs of the Decade List”, “Top 200 Albums of the Decade List” and is a 2009 Georgia Music Hall of Fame inductee. Melodies such as Usher’s “Burn”, “Confessions” and “You Got It Bad” and Mary J. Blige’s record breaking smash “Be Without You” managed to remain securely unbothered in the number one spot.

DAVINCHEUK producer, DaVinChe began his career producing Grime tracks, he has since turned his talents onto projects across various genres. From the sophisticated soul of Shola Ama and Kele Le Roc and the chart-topping heroics of Estelle ,Tinie Tempah , Wretch 32 and Tinchy Stryder then on to the uncompromising sounds of grime pioneers Wiley, Jammer, Skepta, Roll Deep, JME, Giggz, and Kano is one of the reasons why the self-taught studio producer and engineer was named by ‘Wire Magazine’ as a talent to watch. There is a subtext to DaVinChe making him more difficult to pin down or stereotype, he is a pianist and guitarist, who composes and arranges all styles (grime, hip hop, R&B, pop). DaVinChe has performed a classical concert for the BBC.

DJ DON CANNON
The platinum producer originally from Philadelphia and now based in the Atlanta, GA has produced a number of songs for prominent artists such as Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Ludacris, Asher Roth, D Block, Big Sean, The Cool Kids and Fabolous. He has also worked alongside fellow Philadelphian DJ Drama on the popular mixtapes series Gangsta Grillz and the syndicated radio show Gangsta Grillz Radio. Originally from New York, DJ Trauma left the big Apple to attend college at Clark Atlanta University (CAU) in Atlanta, GA. During his tenure at CAU, DJ Trauma gained a fan base by showcasing his programming and mixing skills at college parties which shortly thereafter lead to a tour DJ appearance with Bad Boy Entertainment. On the international front, DJ Trauma was the official DJ for the 2009 Channel-O Awards after party in Johannesburg, South Africa and a special invited guest as a conference panelist, instructor and judge during the 2009 New Skool Rules in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. In addition, DJ Trauma has traveled extensively and provided musical navigation for premier nightclubs in Lagos, Nigeria, London, England, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Nationwide, Trauma has been the featured DJ for annual red carpet events including MTV and BET Awards, Super Bowl, NBA All-Star, Essence Music Awards, Magic ShowLas Vegas and more. Trauma is also an accomplished producer and has worked Estelle, Interscope recording artist Verse Simmonds, hip hop duo Rock City, and new hip hop artist Billz.

Joseph ‘JP’ Patterson is a music journalist who is known for his in-depth knowledge on the UK’s underground music scene. Maria More is an accomplished Radio Personality, Voiceover Talent, Model, and Entrepreneur. The Baltimore Music Conference Sept 17 -20, 2008 continues to bring recognition to music here in Baltimore as well as worldwide and to those that make it happen! Now including film, television, photography, arts and all entertainment mediums, it’s fast becoming an overall media conference. Add in educational forums, visual artists, vendors, dancers, plus more and you have, undoubtedly, the hottest four day event in the Mid-Atlantic region!

One part music festival and one part educational conference, both presenting fun, networking opportunities and entertainment for all.

This year’s event will be held at several venues around town. Some are known for large up-scale events, some are more underground. Some host concert series and some are charming and quaint. Dive bar to posh nightclub and art gallery to theater… much like the BMC, all are known to draw a varied and diverse crowd

The WHEN? WHERE? WHY? & HOW?

This year’s event will be held September 17 - 20, 2008 with our musical showcases, each night at several Baltimore venues known for their support of music and the arts and also includes BAM (B’more Arts & Music), an outdoor festival on Saturday.

The conference sessions will be held Friday and Saturday at the Courtyard Marriott and The Hilton Garden Inn, both located in Harbor East, combining seminars, panel discussions, workshops, film presentations, networking parties and the Marketplace all central to the showcase venues. Selected for their downtown locations and eclectic amenities, these venues combined will easily accommodate the events 4,000+ expected guests. A diverse and eclectic audience, among which will include local and regional industry personnel, media, business and civic leaders, various artisans, area celebrities, musicians, DJs and music fans both locally and globally.

Randy Roper, has played an important role in Carolina music. In 2002, Roper began his career as a hip-hop journalist as a staff writer for Urban Pages Magazine, an independent entertainment magazine, which featured local and independent artists in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2004, upon his graduation from the University of South Carolina, Roper became Editor-In-Chief of Urban Pages, helping the magazine expand it's coverage to independent artists throughout the Carolinas, as well as major acts across the nation. Ron “Tricky” Montgomery

The role of entertainment manager is multi-faceted. Successful managers don several hats serving in numerous capacities simultaneously, all in the name of positioning their clients at the top. Ron “Tricky” Montgomery, CEO of TrickyBizness LLC is one of the most sought after talent managers in music, with an elite roster of the hottest songwriters, producers and artists on the charts. His twenty year tenure as a manager, promoter and consultant has allowed him to witness the many changes in the music industry especially over the last decade, yet he has managed to stay afloat. Today his reputation, by way of his client’s accomplishments, speaks for itself. “You have to keep moving and trying to make things happen. The powers that be are always watching and if you are always moving toward your goals, the opportunities will come. Growing up in Boston, Montgomery was always fascinated with the behind-the-scenes aspect of entertainment. Due to Montgomery’s creative business sense the company quickly became the go-to promotions company throughout the region.

Once his reputation as a successful concert and party promoter was secure, Montgomery started a record label under the same parent company and began managing hip hop and R&B acts. It didn’t take long for the aggressive young manager to snag a deal with Interscope for his R&B act, and begin fielding offers from new clients. “People want to be in business with someone who’s going to make sense in the long run and not just the short run. As a manager you have to know what you have and what you can make happen,” Montgomery explains. After graduation, Montgomery re-located to Atlanta, GA to enroll in law school and re-structured his management company under the moniker TrickyBizness Entertainment.

Currently Montgomery’s roster reads like a who’s who on the billboard charts. On behalf of his clientele he has collaborated with industry superstars such as Jermaine Dupri, Dr. Dre, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, J Holiday, Beyonce and Dallas Austin, just to name a few. He has also secured deals for his clients with every major record label in existence to date. As a behind the scenes consultant, Montgomery has been instrumental in breaking countless #1 records along with brokering deals for various artists, songwriters and producers outside of his talented roster. Someone asked what new things would you like to see at future music conferences? I thought this was an excellent question that isn't asked often enough by conference organizers. Below is my response.

You'll also want to download and read the TRUTH BOOK has it has practical information for increasing your ability to get the most out of any music conference, music showcase or record pool meeting.

If the music conference is held on a college campus it may be wise to do it when classes our in session to draw off the energy from the student population.

Have the conference in an area that has free wifi, so people may network online while at the conference. This gives people the ability to present their website to potential and future clients while at the conference. Additionally, for those people who are e-commerce enabled it gives them the ability to conduct transactions on the spot, that's awesome.

If panels will be conducted limit the amount of speakers to ensure your presenters have the ability to share valuable information. I've been to some conferences where there are 10 speakers for a 60 or 90 minute panel. While this may appear impressive, because the conference is able to get many names on one (1) panel, it greatly limits the amount of time each speaker has to present qualitative information, wisdom and experience to attendees.

Unfortunately, many recording artists and music producers don't want to here the information that will truly empower them to boost their business -they'd rather just perform, but for those business savvy individuals you may want to have more meat when it comes to the information on the music business. For instance, having three (3) to five (5) panels is ideal when possible, even if this means having shorter discussions to cover more topics.

Bring in more speakers and presenters that are able to share information about the New Music Business Models, Internet Marketing, Mobile Content Delivery & Monetization and Making Money Online. Now that's Industry Pimping!

UGA's Music Business Program began in January 2006 as an
interdisciplinary certificate program organized and operated by the
University's Terry College of Business and the Hugh Hodgson School of
Music in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Students take
seven classes, a mix of basic business and music courses, including
the music business I and II courses designed by co-directors Steve
Dancz and Bruce Burch.

In addition to guest lectures from prominent figures in the music
industry, students gain real-world music industry experience through
externships with record labels, promoters, studios and other
entertainment companies. Students are also asked to find local artists
with potential and promote them through their student-run record
labels.

Fiery Debate Heats Up Music Business Panel

DJ Dee Mello -entrepreneur & on-air talent in Atlanta produces a radio program called BLACKANOMICS that airs on XM/SIRIUS Sattelite Radio Channel 169, The Power. The program was designed to educate, inspire & motivate entrepreneurs to embrace the concept of upward mobility through the creation of their own economic empowerment.

Dee Mello was asked by the Black College Radio Convention to aid them in organizing the The Positive & Negative Influence of Rap & Hip Hop In Our Society Today Panel. Featured speakers included JaWar -Motivational Speaker/Author/Business Consultant, B. Brown -Bar Red Ent., Willie Hunter -Publicists/Film Critic, Chris -Aarow Records, Soul Messiah & Kevin "Koolin" Fox -Dir. of Urban Programming/Clear Channel.

In addition to the panelists I met Paul McGregor -SWIM, James Bryant -Clear View, Rodney Oliver -ETC Recordings, Shirley L. Ellis -Fort Valley State, Shannon Levingston -Wiley College, Benjamin Johnson -Albany State University and more.

The fiery debates during the music industry panel stemmed from such passion among panelists and guests with what seemed to be opposing arguments. After consideration one may conclude that the opposing arguments were actually complimentary as it appeared as we were all seeking to arrive at the same place.

Chris delivered his experience of fortitude as he recounted the steps he took to get commercial radio airplay for Jarvis on V-103 (wvee) in Atlanta several years back. He spoke of how Tosha Luv showed Jarvis love by giving the song a chance. Chris's testament was relevant as he spoke to an audience of future owner/operators, ceo's and board members of major corporations. He shared how soon they will be in a position of authority to effect real change. They have and will continue to have the voice to green light positive images and music to the public. Other panelists echoed that sentiment.

I spoke of the importance of being owner/operators in order to create real change in the music business. The audience was encouraged & challenged to stretch their creative imaginations, to go beyond the boundaries of the norm and to do the unexpected.

This music business panel was one of the most exciting I've witnessed. In its' 29th Year the Black College Radio Convention was still educating and encouraging future radio station owner/operators to go the extra mile and achieve all the goodness they could. Students seemed thankful and excited that they attended the music conference. There were a number of highlights and historic firsts during the Radio Music Conference. DJ Judge Mental was the first DJ to ever present a power-point presentation on the music business during a music conference. This was the first time a music conference truly delivered cutting edge international music business information, health related issues, motivational speaking and a how to make money online seminar at the same event. The Southwest Georgia Radio Music Conference was the first to be held in Downtown Albany at the Hilton Garden Inn. The Radio Music Conference was the first in Albany to encourage guests to bring laptops so they may actively participate in the make money online seminar at a higher degree. This music conference was the first in Albany, GA to have a featured speaker to fly in from Brazil to present.

Honestly, this is one of the only conferences I’ve attended were the guests, featured speakers and partners all took diligent notes. The information was truly dynamic.

The spirit throughout the conference was one of positive encouragement and the need to learn to earn. It was the collective effort and single goal and mission of envisioning an event that would empower others to do for self that made the Southwest Georgia Radio Music Conference such a huge success. We have to raise the bar and expectations at music conferences if we are all to benefit from them. At a minimum, music conference organizers should provide the following:

Notepads
Ink pens
Adequate Lighting: When a music conference is held at a nightclub the lights should be turned on during any panel discussion. This ensures attendees have proper lighting to take fantastic notes. It also ensures the speakers can see the audience.
Networking Opportunity: It has been my experience that many attendees are not familiar with networking techniques. Music conference organizers may put basic points on how to network at a music conference on their website, myspace page and printed material at the conference. For networking techniques download the Truth Ebook. Also, organizers should encourage attendees to network with each other before and after panels and workshops or held.

While music conferences have an opportunity to encourage a greater level of professionalism at their event, it is ultimately up to the individual to ensure they are prepared to learn about the music business and network. Attendees should do the following:

The Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA's) Music Conference was well attended. Jesse Johnson, Janiro Hawkins & Brent Buford did an excellent job of putting together a great group of speakers for the conference.

Wendy Day moderated all six panels over two days on her own. No, she isn't an octopus. The music conference was designed in such a way that their was one panel being held at a time. The panels were rotated using three different rooms. Each panel started on time and ended on time, thanks to Wendy not allowing panelists and question and answer to run over. Panels included How to Get a Record Deal, Assembling a Killer Team, Building a Buzz, How To Put Out Your Own CD, Making Money with Mixed CDs and DVDs and Get Your Song On The Radio.

The panelists all seem to be very candid, informative and open in sharing information that would empower attendees and each other. Some of my personal highlights included Kaspa -Hittmen DJs, because he was able to stay on course and give everyone 5 to 7 point system to help them move their career forward. Nick Love -Proving Grounds, LLC was instrumental in relating his personal experience, having a dedicated work ethic and building solid relationships is paramount for long-term growth in the music business.

DJ Judge Mental and Scorpio both shared great information as well. Scorpio was both entertaining and informative at the same as he spoke about the proper way to approach a DJ and build relationships in the industry. He shared that while some people may view him as some square dude he is a powerful cat in his own right that can help an independent label or artists music career.

In the middle of a panel Wendy Day came to me put some money in my hands and ask for a few Music Industry Connection Books. Then she turned around and gave the books to TMI to give away to a few of the attendees during the panel. Then I gave Wendy additional copies of the 18 FAQ's (frequently asked questions) about the Music Business to give away with the Music Industry Connection Books. It was an awesome feeling to give and receive in the same moment.

I was able to share with attendees how they could generate performance royalty income from their music being played on various myspace music players online. In addition, I reminded the audience that we were in business to make a financial profit and we should focus our discussion on how to make money online and off. Apparently, my information was well received as a number of people thanked me and wondered why I'd not been a featured speaker. Ok, so one of my booking agents has been aggressively contacting a number of music conferences in an effort to get me to speak so that I can share with you how to make money online using the Now (New) Music Business Model. Honestly, things have been going very well even though in the music industry, conferences are not accustomed to financially compensating their speakers -that's another blog.

In any event the music conference in question is away from my local market (Atlanta) and would require a considerable amount of time and money for me to get there. In exchange for me agreeing to speak during the conference in question I'd requested that travel and hotel expenses be absorbed by the conference. It was also requested that I have a booth to display the Music Industry Connection Book Series, that a link be placed on the official conference website pointing to either gojawar.com or gomusicconnection.com. The conference correspondent said that I was asking for to much and the conference didn't compensate its' speakers financially.

We said we understood the conferences position and could they counter our offer. We were told that we would be presented with a great offer, but "could I go ahead and agree to speak on several of the panels," the conference representative asked. SOMETHINGS WRONG HERE FRIENDS! If I'm agreeing to bring real value to the constituents (showing them how to make money online in the music business) and have said that I'm willing to come to the event at the very minimum the conference should counter with a bona fide offer. Instead, the conference representative has repeatedly asked that I agree to speak even though they have not agreed nor countered any of our terms.

Friends, in life as in business you give and you get. There must be a mutually beneficial arrangement. Typically, one side starts high and the other side starts low in negotiations the goal is to meet somewhere in the middle creating a win/win/win situation. Thus far this situation seems to be a bit of a win/loose/loose.

The music conference in question wins because they get to have a dynamic, motivational speaker share information that will have their attendees asking for more. The conference has agreed not to pay the speaker (that's me), nor compensate for any travel arrangements or provide a booth, extra passes or link from their website to either gojawar.com or gomusicconnection.com. Attendees of the music conference loose, because they miss out on an opportunity to learn in a practical step-by-step process how to make money on the Internet in the music business. Perhaps there will be, but I didn't see anyone who was going to share specific details with attendees on how to monetize their web presence immediately. I loose because I don't get a chance to meet and greet new people and share information that's empowering the independent music community throughout the U.S. to make money online.

While I will not say which music conference it is that seems to be hustling JaWar I will say that they were put in the 2008 music conference schedule prior to being contacted by our staff and they appear in the Truth about Record Pools & Music Conferences, Talent Shows & Open Mic Book. Honestly, I thought about pulling them off the 2008 music conference schedule, but I created the list for you the independent recording artist, garage band, singer, songwriter, rapper, musician, record label, etc. seeking to network and boost your business. Because of this I've decided to keep them on the list.

In 2008 and beyond if a music conference is not showing you how to monetize your web presence and help you become "Googleable" it's time they hired JaWar.
